Overview of the transport system in Fiji Fiji has no shortage of buses, taxis and mini buses for you to choose from. There are regular daily bus services around the urban areas and between towns. There are more services (at regular intervals of 10-15 minutes) from Monday to Saturday but less on Sundays (when buses come at regular intervals of 30 minutes to an hour). Bus fares for travel around urban areas usually costs between 30c-$1.00 and more for travel between towns and cities. While taxis in Suva have meter rates (tariff starts at $2.00) in Nadi taxis have fixed rates. If you're travelling in and around Nadi, fixed rates can range from $2 to $20. For travel within Suva, taxis can cost anything between $2-10. Like bus fares, taxi fares are higher when travelling between the main urban centres. One thing that locals do is to catch a return cab where you only have to pay the equivalent of a bus fare for that route. So if you caught a return cab from Lautoka to Nadi, you'd only have to pay the bus fare for the route (around $2.00). Taxis in Suva are usually 24 hours, in Nadi - it varies with some taxis stopping their services at 11.30pm or 12.00 midnight and others offering 24-hour services. Airport and hotel taxis (in Nadi and Suva) also have different rates (slightly higher) from other regular taxi services. Mini buses are another cheap way to travel. Fares are usually $2 for short distances (eg. travelling between Nadi and Lautoka). |
